The best thread count for sheets is 300 to 500. Below 200, cotton feels thin and coarse. Above 600, you are paying for a number you cannot feel. And a 1,000 thread count sheet is often worse than a 400, because counts that high are usually reached by counting the individual strands inside multi-ply yarn: the package claims 1,000 while the fabric underneath is denser, heavier, less breathable, and spun from shorter fiber. The Sleep Foundation says it plainly: a 900 thread count set can be lower quality than a 300. Here is what the number was never able to tell you. Thread count measures how tightly a cotton fabric is woven. It measures nothing about how much moisture the fabric moves away from your skin, how rough its surface is against your face, or how much bacteria it holds overnight. So comparing two cotton sets, 400 single-ply beats 1,000 multi-ply almost every time. But notice what you are choosing between: two versions of the same fiber, sorted by a number that describes the weave. Neither figure tells you what the fabric will do to your face while you sleep on it.

Why are 1,000 thread count sheets worse than 400?

Because of a counting trick called ply inflation. A single-ply yarn is one strand; a two-ply or three-ply yarn twists several thinner, often lower-grade strands together. Accepted industry practice, and the definition ASTM proposed in 2002, is to count each thread once regardless of ply. Count the plies separately and the number inflates: 250 two-ply yarns in each direction becomes an advertised 1,000.

This is not a fringe complaint. The Federal Trade Commission agreed consumers could be deceived or misled by inflated thread counts, and in 2017 issued a General Exclusion Order barring the import of woven textiles marked with them. Textile specialists have long argued that past roughly 400 there is no quality difference left to buy.

Beyond the label, cramming more thread into the same square inch has three physical consequences you will actually notice:

  • It sleeps warmer. A denser weave leaves less room for air and vapor to pass, so heat and moisture stay trapped against you.
  • It pills sooner. Inflated counts rely on shorter, cheaper fiber that works loose and balls up after a few wash cycles.
  • It stays damp longer. A heavier fabric holds more water, so sweat and oil sit at the surface instead of clearing.

What does thread count actually measure?

Thread count is the number of threads in one square inch of fabric, adding the lengthwise warp threads to the crosswise weft threads. That is the whole definition, and it was a useful shorthand when nearly all bedding was cotton and the only variable worth comparing was how finely it was woven.

Which leaves it silent on nearly everything that matters: the fiber and its grade, how much moisture the fabric moves away from your skin, how rough the surface is against your face and hair, how much bacteria it harbors, and how it was finished. Judging sheets by thread count is like judging a mattress by its weight. It is a real measurement of the wrong thing.

Does thread count matter for eucalyptus or lyocell sheets?

Not meaningfully, which is why most lyocell makers do not print one on the package. Cotton is a natural staple fiber of uneven length and thickness, so weaving it more finely is the main lever a manufacturer has to make it feel smoother. Lyocell is engineered: the fibers emerge uniform at 10 to 12 µm, so the smoothness is in the fiber before the fabric is woven. Adding thread density on top gains little and costs breathability.

  1. Start with the fiber, not the number. "Eucalyptus" or "bamboo" alone is a category, not a specification, and plenty of cheap viscose is sold under both names.
